SAN JUAN – Over 2,000 Pharr-San Juan-Alamo Independent School District (PSJA ISD) 5th-grade students were inspired during the annual 5th Grade College and Career Expo held at the Dr. Daniel P. King PSJA College and University Center on November 15 - 16, 2023.
Hosted annually through a collaboration with the PSJA College Readiness Department, PSJA Career & Technical Education Department (PSJA CTE), and the PSJA Counseling and Guidance Department, 5th-grade students were invited to get a head start on their futures by exposing them to the various fields of study and career paths available to them once in high school.
“Students were able to learn about extracurricular activities and all the different opportunities that PSJA ISD has to offer,” said PSJA Counseling and Guidance Department Director Virginia Saenz. “The goal of this expo is to help our students start planning ahead so they can be focused and start planning their career goals.”
In addition, students were also able to tour the facilities located at the Dr. Daniel P. King PSJA College and University Center that houses the PSJA Academies and PSJA Collegiate School of Health Professions.
Offered through the PSJA Early College Program, the PSJA Academies provide additional hands-on learning in various specific fields of study supporting students as they work to obtain a Certificate or an Associate Degree from South Texas College.
Daisy Bravo a 5th grade student from Drs Reed & Mock Elementary, was excited to hear at the PSJA College and Career Expo that she could take advantage of academic opportunities while still participating in sports.
“My favorite booth at the expo was the sports booth,” said Bravo. “I like to swim and learned a lot about the Water polo program, I want to join it when I’m in high school.”
